Unemployment Cases in Maryland Skyrocket – Up Nearly 1000% in One Week

Maryland’s Department of Labor is reporting a major increase in unemployment claims.

There were 42,334 unemployment insurance claims for the week of March 21, up nearly 1000% from the previous week where there are only 3,852 unemployment insurance claims.

These numbers were reported for a time period prior to Governor Larry Hogan’s executive order which closed all non essential businesses. That move likely led to an exponentially greater number of unemployment claims, which will be reported next week.

On the Eastern Shore, Worcester County had the highest reported unemployment claims equaling 971 people.
